Way back since pre-historic days and even before that males used to inhale a whole bunch of smoke when they wanted to go in search of a mate.

Then they would go out and get in front of the girl they wanted and start blowing the smoke out their ears.

When the girl started yapping and yapping away, lo and behold the male couldn't hear her and so he was not turned off. His naturally necessary hormonal desires for her thus remained in tact.

Simultaneously, and defying all seeming logic, the female was able to momentarily concentrate on something other than her own yapping self. In fact, the more smoke that was blown the more she became absolutely smitten with her male counterpart and could think of nothing more than how to make sure he was hers for all of time to come (or at least until he ran out of smoke, or she found another caveman who could blow even more smoke!).

That is how it was and that is how it is and that is how it ever shall be, as far as I know.
