And… what if he appeared in the early 1990’s instead of the mid 1970’s?

Well, he might look like Kurt Cobain.

The purpose of this article is to explore the possibility that Cobain killed himself because the Sex Pistols had already done it all -- in a rock arena -- already. They killed rock & roll. They completed rock & roll, as pointed out by Greil Marcus in Lipstick Traces.

How did they do it? By co-opting dada, the World War I era anti-art.

Now, Nirvana was not anti-art. And the Sex Pistols were. But Kurt Cobain’s angst is indicative of the un-winnable situation he was in: he wanted to do what the Sex Pistols had already done. But once rock was dead, it couldn’t be killed again.

He was on a spiritual journey. But he was unfortunately nostalgic.

We did lose a great soul when Kurt Cobain murdered himself.

Kurt Cobain and the nihilistic void

Cobain could not face the nihilistic void of the post-Sex Pistols era. Who can? It’s a question worth pondering. Can any individual “stay alive” these days? That is: is there anything for any of us to do anymore? Is there a hero’s journey to be taken?

Was Cobain unable to face the fact that the romantic heroic journey he wanted to take was irrelevant by the time he appeared in the 90’s?

So he did what he could: made Nevermind and In Utero, spat at the cameras, gave the finger to his crowd, did an acoustic Unplugged set, tried to turn us on to his musical influences. But ultimately the most revolutionary rock figure of the past 30 years was just drawing with crayons on the void of the post-satellite Android Meme era; earning a good living but unable to face up to the reality of the situation.

No more artists?

The nihilistic void of today is a tough one to face for anyone with that old “I wanna be an artist and make a difference” bug. It seems pretty clear to me that this is an old, dead romantic notion. No change is coming through the arts or rock music, is it? Nothing revolutionary.

So where is the revolution coming through today? I would suggest it is the new media, as they appear.

The Internet began to be widely available right as Nirvana was dying out: 1993, 1994. (Kurt killed himself on April 3, 1994, and his body was discovered on April 5.)

How could anything that Kurt Cobain envisioned “doing for the masses” have had a collective impact anywhere on the order of the Internet or cell phones? But he probably would’ve been satisfied with nothing less, more or less.

Ween learned from Duchamp and the Sex Pistols

A good example of one of today’s bands that knows their place is Ween. They have transmuted many of the same energies that Cobain felt and churned them out as humorous music. It is not self-reflective and it does not take itself seriously. It is a consistent type of music to make in the post-Duchamp era we live in. Ween’s music is not trying to deny that art itself was killed/completed when Marcel Duchamp turned a urinal on its back, signed it “R. Mutt”, named it Fountain, and got it displayed in a gallery in 1917.

Sixty years later, Johnny Rotten and the Sex Pistols copied the essence of Duchamp’s Fountain and made it appear as… Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols.

It is no coincidence that Kurt Cobain picked Nevermind as the title for Nirvana’s breakout album.

Rock Influences: My New Site

Announcing the creation of Rock Influences (rockinfluences.com), an encyclopedia of rock influences. The experiences are ten years old. (That's an entire decade!)

Picture on the left was drawn by yours truly. Just leafed through a couple journals quickly to try to be able to provide some context (date, location, etc.) but I couldn't find the picture. Not all that up for an all-out hunt to figure it out either. Who cares? HAHAHA.

Or, to put it differently: it's not all that relevant. I think I was probably in Trenton Psychiatric (the worst) but I could very well be wrong. The point is the picture not this babble :-D

UPDATE: Note the emergence of The Free Key here in this piece. It will appear elsewhere in the journals, too, to a certain extent. And you will see me bring it back into vogue with my future creative projects and concepts. It's a "key" metaphor ;-O as well as of course a play on words if you didn't figure that one out: FREAKY DEAKY MMM HMM. Let's get freaky now everybody now get freaky witchyo bad self...

UPDATE 2: Fail Blog came up with this relevant pic:

SHS Gift: Nat Hunt's "My Foot in the Door" (and now special bonus track: "I'm Comin' Home La Di Da")

[UPDATE: Second song changed; scroll down to see.]

Hey everybody, the following is a 1:23 long song that I recorded today. It came to me spontaneously after pacing around my apartment for fifteen or twenty minutes (in a circle) trying to get into the right mood. In truth, it's a gift to all who received the mass e-mail "Greetings From The Center Of Your Heart". Since the auction was pulled early, I figured the least I could do was throw a little audio out there:

My Foot in the Door:

I ain't got nothin' left
No more
With my foot in the door

Ooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh

My whore
She loves to treat the poor
Ain't nothin' more
What a bore

Download "My Foot in the Door"

************

The following was a little too explicit for what I am trying to do right now, which is why it's crossed out. Scroll down to find the song in its place, its replacement: "I'm Comin' Home La Di Da".

<strike>Now, I've got another surprise for you too. It's a 10-minute song that I also made up spontaneously. (Don't know if that's apparent or not when you listen to it.)</strike>

<strike>Before I Was There I Am:</strike>

<strike>It's a softer set than the preceding one which should've blown out your speakers like it did my little child molestor mic but if you play that one in lots of different places you will start to see how audio works, what it means to overfill the microphone, the effects of different geometries on the experience of hearing, etc.</strike>

I'm Comin' Home La Di Da:

This is a nice, more traditionally structured song.

All angels
On guard
I mean it with all
My heart
His naturally necessary hormonal desires for her thus remained in tact.

Simultaneously, and defying all seeming logic, the female was able to momentarily concentrate on something other than her own yapping self. In fact, the more smoke that was blown the more she became absolutely smitten with her male counterpart and could think of nothing more than how to make sure he was hers for all of time to come (or at least until he ran out of smoke, or she found another caveman who could blow even more smoke!).

That is how it was and that is how it is and that is how it ever shall be, as far as I know.

The Collected Werks of Nat Hunt

A series of journals I did a decade ago <strike>are</strike> were up for sale on eBay:

XXX

Stay tuned for more details.

B.O.'s Horrific Walk to His Own Crucifiction: The True Story of a True Leader

This post will hopefully be short and sweet. I just need to get down a basic idea on Barack Obama (B.O. as he's referred to in the title of this thread).

Here's a prediction: B.O. is gonna get trounced. He's gonna have a hellish couple years here. Almost the entire nation is going to turn against him, their own leader. So I say it's like Christ walking to his own crucifixion. Where all the Tea Partiers and I part company is that I believe Barack Obama truly is the right man for the job, and he will have a change of understanding at some point and then he'll put the Cherry on top of the cake.

In the meantime, everybody start thinking about how you can get involved in your local government, what is your civic duty as an American, what's your favorite Tastee-Ice flavor at the 4th of July?

It may become tough to watch poor, noble, misled B.O. get kamikazed day in day out on national TV. Heating up evermore. But take some solace in the fact (or fiction) that Everything Will Work Out Perfectly In The End, As It Always Does.

May the truth always triumph in the USA!

Make It All Nothing AKA How Many Homilies Doth Thine Eyes See?

Pi
Pi
Pi

Let me preach here per se:

Make it all nothing at all. Fill it all up with nothingness. Now, what can Nothing do to you? Well, nothing of course! There, you are invincible. (But don't be a dick! Or a bitch if you're a woman.)

That is my homily on nothing. If you want to go more in depth into it then read on. There it will all be further explained, fleshed out, made more manageable, presented in layman's terms.

Looky here: we're almost to the place that I was just talking about! I think I'll send a postcard to my family and friends.

::CLANK::

While the shipmates tie up the boat I will give you the homily's homily. That is why you're here, right? You know that a homily is a commentary that follows a reading of scripture? It is intended to make sense of the sometimes archaic or labyrinthine, vexing, passages slosh osh a-gished to us from the past.

But the above (the way tippy top of this post) was the homily. The homily's already been said. It was the scripture, maybe, that you thought was missing. But since the "scripture" I am preaching on today is Nothing-At-All then there can be no source text! I mean, c'mon folks, what kind of a fool do you think I am? Do you think I would ruin the whole Teaching by sticking Something into Nothing and then quoting that Some-No-Thing-Ness in my homily about Itself? No, of course not! That would serve no purpose whatsoever! That would be like a little kid throwing a piece of chalk across a long Arizona road. It's just an after-effect, and not even that, really.

And you know what else: they have really painted the mad genius in a bad light. The Mad Genius is always the guy who blows up the world, never the one who saves it, is he? Well, I'm here to say that doesn't have to be. We can turn that stereotype right around and send it on out of town like the clown that it is, was, and always will be! So, here, in a bit of an Intermission on the homily-homily postscript I present to you the new hero:

The Good Mad Genius

Anyway, we should probably tie up this homily de la homily because it's getting late and I want to go to bed and dream. I want to dive like a knife into the Infinite Blackness of It All: Where Nothing Is.

So, realize that all of manifestation is happening inside of You. You are this Nothingness. And everything that "manifests itself" is also this Nothingness. So what is there to fear? If everything is just you, then what is there to fear? If you are eternal and cannot die, and furthermore you are All There Is, then fear doesn't seem to have much of a place at the table anymore, does it?

I AM

ALL THERE

EVER WAS

WILL BE

COULD BE

HAS BEEN

DOOBY

DOO

And that, in a nutshell is what the non-scripture of Nothingness is pointing at: I am safe, evolving, whatever, words suck when turned toward Infinity, they ruin and scab the pavement, more or less, that I am safe and here and always am and time is an illusion which does not apply to my actual existence as What I Am (Consciousness Itself?) so therefore I sit peacefully hovering in and out of it All for all of eternity. Nay, neither hovering nor not hovering! Let's put it this way:

You wouldn't try to walk a bird with a dog leash, would you?

May the truth always triumph in the USA!

Dalai Lama Fist Bumps Mayor of Memphis: It's the End of Postmodernism!

Briefly now, have you seen this video clip of the Dalai Lama fist-bumping the Mayor of Memphis?

It struck me for some odd reason. There was something about it... Ahh yes, it made the End of the hardly bearable period called Postmodernism. That meaningless drudgery of the past however many years. It's done now. Because the Dalai Lama fist-bumped the Mayor of Memphis. It clouded all of Postmodernism's attempts at destroying truth and meaning out. It took them and shook them down. It proved that man was God and vice versa and there is no boundary (anymore) between the spiritual and the material.

When the Dalai Lama fist-bumped the Mayor of Memphis the Entire Meaningless Century became nothing but a cesspool of infinite references. Now we have it stored in our records. Ready to be referenced in a minute's notice, nay not even a second. That is how we do it these days!

Postmodernism ended in the silence of a fist bump. Not even a good fist bump. Between the Mayor of the Wicked City (?) and His Holiness the Ever-Worldlier Dalai Lama.

Infinite perspectives has been shattered.

Now once again there is a path with a light lighting it. Or is the path made of light itself? Or is the path itself made of light?

May the truth always triumph in the USA!

Why There IS a Revolution Brewing, and MSM as Rip Van Winkle Media

I am not sure if it is quite in the purview of this blog to merely direct your attention elsewhere, but that is what I'm about to do. A quite shining, shimmering article was brought to my attention somehow (I've forgotten how now) and it is lodged over at this address:

Sleeping Through the Revolution

I think you will find that if you have presently been defiant in the face of Glenn Beck's antics, maybe you may come around to him through reading this article, though it maketh no mention of him. The Washington Post is shrugging its shoulders, saying, "What happen?" Or: "Where did we miss the boat?" At least they are not alone! Almost every major media outlet is out there treading water in the smelly sea right alongside that old political stalwart. As does the article, I commend their self-reflection.

There is a new era of government accountability dawning and Barack Obama will probably run as fast and as long as he can to get away from the prying eyes of the American people, but by golly gee we just don't seem to be all that hypnotizable!

PS: The new name for the mainstream media is the Rip Van Winkle Media. I think that fits. All the news that's fit to print (aeons ago) with lots of liberal brussel sprouts sprouting out of it.

May the truth always triumph in the USA!

Music Recommendation Fridays: of Montreal's "Grolandic Edit"

Yeah this is not just gonna be a political blog. A country with a long history of racism had done something quite unthinkable only a year earlier: chosen a (half) black man to lead it. (He may "only" be half black, but he looks all black, for all intents and purposes making him the first black President here in the USA.)

Many even thought he was more than just an electable/elected black guy: they thought he was going to bring change. And not just any change: "change we can believe in". Thinking back, there were a lot of vague slogans that Obama and his people kept booming out through the media. Wasn't there something about hope too?

I think a lot of us wanted to believe that Obama really was going to be a good old transformational President. Maybe he will be. But I think we wanted to believe he was going to be an American President. Now I see that he is not too big a fan of America. (And weren't there lots of clues during the campaign?) I, like many other Americans, let our hope that Obama would be the first black President and would govern more or less within the typical bounds of an American President -- we let this hope steer us away from our more peripheral perceptions that there indeed was something alarming about many of Obama's connections, as well as his extreme liberal voting record. (He was the #1 or #2 most liberal voter in the Senate.)

Basically, we didn't want to believe that this guy might not really love (or even like?) the USA, and that he was going to do everything in his power to take power from the people in order to systematically (and subtly) start correcting all of our flaws and immoralities through legislation, propaganda, and whatever other means are available to the President of the United States, the mightiest man in the Mightiest Land.

Of course there were all those a-holes on the Right screaming this message out day in day out. Sounding rude and racist as they beamed through the AM dial on our radios and our Fox News Channel (fallen from grace at that point). I don't know about you, but I was in no mood to give Sean Hannity the benefit of the doubt on any argument. All of those guys I viewed as complicit in Bush's shenanigans. I, like many other Americans, chalked up the media's harping on Reverend Wright, Bill Ayers, and ACORN to some sort of Joe McCarthy witch-hunt. And I thought it was probably being informed by mere partisanship and quite likely a fair tinge of racism. That was the attitude that led to the media's eventual downplay of these relevant parts of Barack Obama's biography. And I think it was fear of being branded racist which informed John McCain's decision to not really make a big deal out of Obama's connections, much to many of McCain's supporters dismay.

Am I saying that Obama was elected because he is black? Or because "white guilt" whites wanted to believe that he was what they had hoped for? No. Definitely not. If the Democrats couldn't get their candidate elected in the wake of George W. Bush... well it just wasn't going to happen.

Did Obama get elected because he followed in the footsteps of one of the most reviled Presidents of all time? Maybe he did. (And maybe he should stop talking shit on Bush and start thanking him!)

But all of that is a bit too speculative to be interesting. What's more interesting to me is that Barack Obama did get elected President. (I voted for him, by the way. I am one of those independents which they say Obama is losing by the droves these days.) And now he is our President. And despite the fact that I am aghast at just about everything he has done and (even more so) is trying to do, I still believe he is the right man for the job. How could this be so?

There are no mistakes. Obama was meant to be President just like Bush 43 was, and even just like William Henry Harrison was supposed to hold the office for a mere 32 days until he died of a cold in 1841. (Did you know he was the oldest person to be elected POTUS until Reagan in 1980? Or that he was the last President to be born before the Declaration of Independence?)

There are no mistakes. And the fact that a wanna-be Socialist is our Supreme Leader as I write this post is no mistake.

One of two things are going to come from Obama's reign. This is my prediction:

Obama takes his own advice and changes. I say to him, "Give up the notion that you help anyone by playing Salesman-in-Chief. Take another look at the Constitution. Throw out everything you think you know about America and read the Founding Fathers with a new eye, if you can get over the fact that they had slaves. (I can imagine it must be hard as hell.) Let the Chinese experiment with Communism and let the Europeans try out Socialism. We're America and we don't follow anyone. We lead the way. Always."

(This is the one that's already happening and gaining major steam.) Obama plays stubborn and dumb and keeps trying to push his more-power-for-the-government agenda. He may or may not get some of it through. (Let us pray that the Republicans, the Tea Party, and whoever else believes in freedom for the individual STOP EVERYTHING THAT OBAMA AND CONGRESS TRY TO PASS UNTIL ALL THEIR SECRETS ARE OUT AND THEY KNOW WHO THEY'RE WORKING FOR AND WHO THEY REPRESENT. This "transformational" possibility is the one that is winning right now. And its face is the Tea Party, without a doubt. Mark my words: we are in a new era where the politicians can no longer hide. From now on, to the extent that they try to hide, to that extent will the Tea Party grow in size, volume, and power. And in the coming months and years absolutely no politician is going to want to be on the wrong side of the Tea Party. Not even local ones. But especially not national ones.

To reiterate, to the President, if he happens to be reading this ;-) my message to you is that it's time for you to change. Get proactive. Start telling us the truth. Stop making us have to drag it out of you... Repent and I'll be the first one back in line behind you. There are new rules now and your sales tactics will no longer work.

Maybe you are having a hard time imagining Barack Obama undergoing such a radical change? It is hard to imagine him becoming someone who genuinely appreciates capitalism. I don't think he even understands what freedom really is. Can he come to realize that history shows quite decisively that a government which is humble in the face of its people's overwhelming power, that this is a government which governs well?

I actually believe that maybe he just can. This is why I think he is still the right man for the job. It's going to be a bit bumpy getting to where we're going, but that's okay: all's well that ends well.

Barack Obama is an open-minded thinker. He does have that element of philosopher in him which could lead to his own personal tipping point. If that happens during the next four or eight years (and only if that happens), then he will be able to bring his vision of transformation to bear in a way that is completely American; in a way that even the Founding Fathers could get behind.

And until he's changed, me and the Tea Party and Glenn Beck are going to do everything we possibly can to stop him from doing anything at all. Why? Because it is our duty as Americans. Because we love America.
